Im curious

Sorry to bother you all on a pointless question, but with walkers, how do the shufflebots that quickly 'scutter' through the arena work? examples of this type of walking is Scutter, and that vertical spinner walker masterpiece Peter Waller made recently, im just wondering how it works and how difficult it is to build?

Basically the mechanism is based on crankshafts as the drawing below shows.
Image
The leg centre hole fits onto the crankshaft and the long pin runs in the slot.
The leg goes from the positions show in Blue through Cyan to Green in the stepping stage then goes via the red back to blue in the recovery stage.
In this example there are two legs 180 degrees out of phase but my newer walkers tend to have 3 legs 120 degrees out of phase giving a much smoother walk.
Hope that helps.
