First Time Bulid, Diary, And Noob Questions!

Post by HugoIsOnFire »

Hi, Me and my dad are think of building an ant-weight, almost certainly a pusher, and thought I could run my parts by the forum, and ask some questions.
PARTS:
The Driver:
Botbitz 10a x2
Motors (4WD)
Pimoroni 50:1 micro gearmotors x4 with
Transmitter/Receiver
Turnigy 6X FHSS 2.4ghz Transmitter and Receiver
Chassis
1mm polycarb
Armour: 2mm polycarb on front, back and sides, 1mm on top/bottom
Wheels
Polulu 42x19 wheels
DESIGN:
I thought of a design, then when I was looking through the forum, i found the latest alliteration of Defiant by Peter Waller had the exact same design!, In short, I thought rectangular pusher, two scoops different ways up, and fully invertible with Tornado style wheels slightly inside the chassis for protection.

Many Thanks, Hugo :D

Rather than a sabertooth I'd pick up one of rorys kits. Much better electronics set up. Though you'll need a DSM2 transmitter for that like a Blade/OrangeTX or DX6i

Also you can build the whole robot out of 1.5mm polycarb, with the chassis and armour being the same thing. I wouldnb't go tracks straight away as they actually have a lot of disadvantages in antweights.

A 180mah 2S LiPo is your best bet for battery aswell and very standard.

Thanks Shakey, Ive looked at the transmitters, and i think ill stick with the sabertooth as that transmitter is as much as the entire combined price for all other parts! , and thanks for the chassis/armour suggestion.

There's also that option. I'm trying to ward you off the sabertooth as they are big, heavy and I have had no end of them burn out on me. Plus you'll save money in the long run by just being able to use cheaper electronics in all your bots from the same transmitter.

Welcome to the world of antweights! :) If you want to go for tracks, go for tracks; they don't give as many advantages as you'd think for traction or stability, but the coolness factor is through the roof :3

The Pololu wheels (and tracks) will just fit straight on the motor shafts; the 3mm D shaft design is a fairly standard one so there's quite a large ecosystem of accessories. The Sabertooth will work fine (in fact they're a bit overkill, I've had no problems with the antweight-sized ones burning out), but weigh quite a lot and be quite bulky - if you're set on that transmitter, other speed controller options include Fingertech tinyESCs and BotBitz, although both of those are single channel so you'll need one per side. The wiring should be more or less self explanatory.

I've lost many a sabertooth to 4WD ants joey.

And this is why you win tournaments and I don't :)

Thanks guys, I've looked at your comments, and I'm going to revise the parts a little bit
DRIVER:
2x Botbitz 10a
Chassis/armour:
now all 1.5mm polycarb
Battery
2s 280mah LiPo
Wheels: Definitely going for wheels now.

Do the botbitz need a DSM2 receiver? or can it go with my current set up?
