I should be able to make this, although with what robots I don't yet know - I'll reserve signing up till they're actually built this time! :) I might (with the live stream and everything) also take the opportunity to engage full pretentiousness with a Team Picus shirts and graphics job, if only to distract from how badly I do...

I have never been to AWS and I feel i'm missing out. I am interested so I might come along if I can build a new robot. I need advice on building one to resist spinners would slanted 1mm stainless encourage a spinner to bounce off or is that insufficient.

That would suffice just fine, however it will be weight consuming!

1mm steel is quite over the top for antweight armor. I generally use 0.8-1mm titanium, which is almost indestructible at this weight level if your robot is well designed. Many other people use 1mm aluminium or 2mm HDPE or polycarbonate, which also do just fine. Keep in mind that we've had AWS winners armoured with 1mm polycarbonate and duct tape; at this scale the design and shape of the armor can often be more important than the material.

Whatever you decide, you should definitely come along, robot or not. You'll learn so much in one event, and we're all friendly and helpful, so even if you don't do brilliantly you'll certainly leave with plenty of ideas on how to do so next time!

What kind of idiot would enter a robot like that??

Seriously though, my advise is don't fear the spinners. They look mean and they can cause damage but its so rare nowadays that an opposition to one is completely written off. Plus you always have to option to resign if you take what you consider to be too much punishment. There aren't that many spinners around either, and its perfectly possible to get through a few rounds without meeting a single one. Every single robot that fits the rules is welcome at an AWS, any quality of build and any level of experience. We welcome everyone and we are all more than willing to chat, help out, and make you feel like you belong, regardless of what you build. There is always a chance of winning any fight, so my advice is build something and dive in!

I got through last AWS with out meeting one at all, apart from in the tag team final... admittedly we didn't get past the first 3 rounds in the main comp but meh 8)

2mm hdpe is my armour of choice, for it is easy to shape using a small electric saw and a soldering iron and if well put together it should provide protection from most spinner weapons to a certain degree. see you there. :D
