Ant Freeze 8 - update 28/12/21

Post by limpet »

Update 28/12/21

Ant Freeze will not go ahead in February 2022.
So as not to keep people guessing I’ve made the decision to hold back until later in the year, I think an event needs a good two months from announcement to planned date in order for people to organise properly. (Especially me!)

————-

There will be a new entry format, each team can contain up to four robots, but each must have different weapon types or different combinations of weapons.
For example you could enter a flipper, spinner, axe, and flipper/spinner combined. Each weapon must be independently controlled.
This means the robot must be equipped with a weapon to enter.

Nuts will go before the finalist tournament to help with repair time etc.

Great, I might stand a better chance with my axe bot, given that there are usually only a few axes :)

This format sounds interesting, I'm looking forward to it already. One question, would cluster bots (with or without active weapons) qualify for the freestyle category?

Would it be a better idea to replace the axe category with a pusher category? There's not all that many axes, so it might be better grouping them into freestyle.

If the idea is to have a weapons only event then that's cool though. I'm all for encouraging people to make more axe bots. They're always good fun.

I like the classes it gives a chance to try things like axes out which are not normally very competitive in open classes. It will give me a chance to try out my more experimental robots like spring axe, spring flipper and slow sawtooth grabber that probably wouldn't get into the AWS team.

Fantastic! I love the idea of separate weapon-classes. Not something I'd want to see in AWS but for one-off events it's the perfect excuse to experiment with unfamiliar stuff. Axe-bots a-go-go!

Will this be in the usual Antfreeze venue? Hickley's a bit of a trek for us but the train connections aren't too bad, so I reckon Anthony and I will be up for it this time.

love the idea of seprate classes
i think id be against a full AWS being like that but for a fun event like ant freeze it sounds a blast.

the only thing that has come to mind is how to define an axe. flippers ad spiers seem to be alrady well defined, but what makes something an axe or a gripper? is a gripper alowed i an axe catagory? if not how do you defie the diffrece betwen them other than one is pointy.

this question mostly comes from me working out how to modify one of my flippers into a axe.

my other idea was for the flipper catagory to have all of the pit have a small lip so only flipping and not pushing can win. my guess is this would cause other prolems like very long fights.

will seprate 'Nuts' robots be alowed or do they have to have been in the main event? (definatly not thinking of making a nuts specialist bot.)

I guess the main difference is that an axe is used to strike the opponent repeatedly whereas a grabber is supposed to grip onto and not let go of the other robot. I guess the definition of each just lies in their intended purpose mostly

Sorry I havn`t been on here for a bit, catching up with other stuff.
To answer the questions youve all asked so far....

No pushers in an effort to encourage weapon building and also help keep numbers to a workable level.
Axes seem to be a neglected weapon of later years but they can be very effective and we need a bit of variation.

As far as planned it will be at the same venue, if not then it will still be in the Hinckley area.

I think if it gets to the stage you can`t decide if its a gripper or an axe then I don`t see why you couldnt decide which category to enter it in.

No edge on the pits, like you say we need fights to be as decisive as possible.

Nuts will be kept completely apart from the tournaments therefore Nuts robots are not covered by the weapon rules, pushers are allowed. They can also be from one of the tournaments or can be a totally separate entry.

Also

Weapons do not have to cause damage, you could have crab type claws for instance. Anything that is an active device that is not part of the drive system.

PS

There will be a trophies for each mini tournament as well as the combined grand tournament.
You don`t have to enter a robot in every tournament to compete.
