Personally, I'd say that BMP should not be used at all!

JPG is a pretty good compression algorithm, although slightly lossy.

If you want really big images, you should be using something like TIF or the various proprietry formats used by Paintshop Pro and Photoshop.
Either way, that kind of image should not be used on websites.

As a general rule, keep any individual image below 15KB, and the total of all files on a single page below 30KB. Then it should load in under 30sec on a normal 56k modem.

GIF is still the best for small buttons or similar with few colors!

I'm not putting the pages up now because on the old site the pages leaked on other antweight sites.
