slightly more serious thoughts towards a nano

Post by Occashokka »

Well it's going to be Typical me starting a potential build thread with a lot of eager an little thought and many questions as I want to turn my 2 servos and a spare third board into some form of nano, I'm fairly sure I know how to make the boards into esc's but I don't have a lemon a battery or motors and wheels so I could do with knowing if anyone has any nano batteries with pre soldered plugs and charging things and what motors are currently considered the wise choice

My approach was to use the DT boards with built in motor drivers (here), some 6mm pager gearmotors from eBay (bought so long ago the link doesn't work :(), Micron's tiny single cell LiPos with plugs on (here), and a Molex Picoblade connector on some cable to connect them (here would be one example; I found the 24awg wires were too thick to comfortably solder to the DT board though, so I bought some smaller ones off eBay, but one of them had the wire colours swapped and I blew up a DT board before realising that...).

The 6mm gearmotors are nicely made and, as you saw with the lemon, very fast (I had it on dual rates for most of the event to keep it controllable!), although there's some available with longer gearboxes that obv aren't as fast. They're not convenient for mounting though; I would reccommend either Alex Shakespeare's or Will Thomas's versions of a nanoweight gearmotor that takes the internals of some dual motor gearboxes with much bigger motors (here) but those aren't sold any more :( I do have quite a few in reasonable used condition (with matching wheels even!) I could sell though, drop me a PM if interested...
The alternative motor-wise would be to hack very small servos, which I think is probably the most practical option right now.

Charging-wise, I just plug the 30mah cells into my Pro-Peak Quattro at home and that does the job; with appropriate settings and adapters you don't really need specialist charging gear. In fact there might be more options available; you could even use some of the cheap USB chargers with the right cells!

I'd consult Alex, Peter, or Rory about it, ultimately, since they had nanos at the AWS that weren't a lemon...

I think this is the battery in both my nano and my purpose built cluster partner: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... _Cell.html

You will have to solder your own charge plug onto it but that's not difficult.

I would quite like to have a go at modding some servo boards to make a new nano myself as both of my current ones have been custom jobs by Rory and I would quite like to have a go at it myself however it will most likely have to wait until I've revamped my ant team and finished my featherweight so it could be a while before I get round to doing anything.

Where do people get the lemons from? I can't find any for less than double what Rory pays, also is there a way to get my lemon and battery from one site so I don't have to pay ~£5 postage on each

I get my Lemon RX from here: http://www.lemon-rx.com/index.php?route ... duct_id=94

Nanoweight drive has always been a tricky one; all the motors of the right size have been too fast, too slow, too expensive, or difficult to make. There is currently no good solution like there is with ants. Pete mostly uses the 6mm gear motors that are expensive and a little fast, Alex uses custom 5 stage gearboxes that are perfect speed, but difficult to make, and i mostly use hacked servos, which are very slow..

Is this any good? http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... duct=92288

And how bad would it be to order from the international warehouse as oranges aren't in stock in Europe or uk and a receiver from HK would be good as then I can get a battery aswell and only pay 1 postage

Those are good, but a little big - on a nano you'll only want three channels at most probably, and it's worth the ~1g weight saving to use the smallest reciever you can (I'd reccommend the R410 but obv that's out of stock :()

International warehouse delivery can be anywhere between 1-4 weeks in my experience, but bigger orders seem to be a little slower.

I looked at the more basic 3ch orange but it's £9 and that receiver works out the cheapest as I can get it with the lipo and postage for under a tenner and I've yet to find another way I achieve that

SLIGHT POSTSCRIPT: Browsing Technobots at 3am (as you do) I happened across these, which look quite promising with the ratio and the fact they have a matching wheel (also sold by Technobots). At £22 for a pair with wheels it's relatively expensive, but possibly worth considering?

Those look alright. they are a bit pricy but considering servo boards and lemon rx are so cheap, I doubt it'd make for an overall expensive build.
