Alexandorz's Build Log

Post by Alexandorz »

Hey,

Due to recent viral events happening around the world i have found a little bit more time and motivation while locked away in my own home to have a go at building my first actually functional antweight robot. I bought a few parts a couple of years ago with the same intentions however never got anything more than a plastic wedge with 2 wheels rolling around the dining room. I spent SOME time over the last week CAD modelling a 2WD wedged vertical spinner. I have also printed and assembled an all plastic prototype.

(Tried to add an attachment but apparently the boards reached its attachment quota so I've used Imgur links instead)

See CAD models below.

I spent most of yesterday printing and assembling a first version of the robot.

The parts i am using are:
Battery: 2S 300mAh Turnigy
Drive ESC: Das Mikro 2S6A
Rotor ESC: 12A Turnigy ESC
Drive Motors: Some unbranded ebay 30:1 Gear Motors
Rotor Motor: Mulitstar Viking 1308 Motor
Receiver: Orange R410x

Below are some links to the photos of the assembled form.

The total assembled weight in all plastic as shown in the pictures is 136g so this leaves some weight left for aluminium or poly carb parts. I might also be able to save some weight in plastic by make a few changes and some weight reduction in shortening the wiring.

Interesting design, like the axe style bar, looks dangerous.

i like it... you do need to post video of it mashing up an empty can to really show it off :)

Nice!
Very minor point - in my experience, if a bot can balance on it's side, it will get stuck in that position at some point during a fight. So you might want to add slightly sticky-outy bits on either side, or make the side panels more convex. Sure, you can probably bounce it over using gyro effect from the weapon but it's generally best to design-out the danger of getting stranded (e.g. in case the spinner stops working).

Hey its been a while.

Thanks for the feedback!

I have made the spinning bar and skirts from 2mm thick aluminium and while it certainly looks the part, now its up and running it does have a few minor teething troubles 8-) and there might have to be a version 1.1 in the works.

1. The spinning bar is not quite as effective as i would like, i think the re-curved tips tend to connect at the wrong angle and give a tendency to push the object away rather than get any purchase.

2. Its a little too much of a thicc boy at 153g.

3. I didn't leave enough room between the chassis and the skirts for the wheels I forgot to account for the mounting screws on the model. I currently have the skirt spaced with a washer but now its too wide at 106mm :/.

4. Due to the square base, those pointy aluminium skirts and being a bit front heavy it tends to sit on 3 corners rather than all 4 and this is causing it to drive in a circle not a straight line.

5. As MySolderIsOlder says it can get stuck on its side but i did know about this when designing it. I did a model before this one that did have 10 degree sloped sides but i eventually dropped that design and when for a simpler model.
