Thanks. Mum said I could go with Dad if Chris and one of his parents could take us, in the summer holidays.

Just wondering, can we be a bit sneaky and fit our bot in the cube sideways?
What stops you using a servo for weapons?
and i might as well mount the saw Side ways like for example anticylone

Yes, fit it in whichever way, just so long as it fits.

Pants uses a servo for a weapon, but it's er pants. Lots of robots use servo's for weapons, but they're better at gripping than actually hitting.

Putting the saw sideways seems like a good idea.

P.S. fork out ?3 for one of Pete's AWS DVDs, available from this very site. Well worth it for a beginner.

Simon,

I saw the, um, Antweight Music Video, I learned a few things, for example spinners/saws are more used for pushing than cutting, and how important it is to be in control 100% of the time, as the arena is SO small!
For a spinner/saw, how would a hardened-steel fabric-cutting disc perform? Mum has a few that are no longer good for fabric as they are very slightly chipped. They are about 1.5mm thick, so two or more fixed together might be an idea?

Hi Nick,

Unless you're fighting a robot made of cardboard, a single a hit from a spinner won't cause fatal damage, but will impart lots of kinetic energy and momentum.

Does the disc have teeth? If so, and it fits in the 4 inch cube then it sounds perfect, especially as you're on a budget. Weigh them before deciding how many to use, as if they're say 15g each then you may only be able to have one in your robot.

Nemesis-also try looking at slitting saw blades. they were recommended by my DT teacher, and after seeing a few, they are quite impressive. Your blades sound quite cool though.

Simon and Adam,
Number One the disc is without teeth (that will most probably change), about 15mm in radius and <=10g.

Oh, also, everybody, we got free polycarbonate from the school's DT Dept so no worries there.

Nick

PS: What do you mean by slitting, Adam?
