I usually use doublesided tape to stop it moving sideways and a cable tie for mechanical strength.

Yeah, tape works... I've used bluetac as well before, but that got caught in the gearbox with unpleasant results :L

Here is the solution I came up with:

It's a 3d printed mount which holds the motors really securely then they are held down with cable ties, it also holds the battery as well but the mount is heavier than if like so may have to downgrade to something simpler/lighter.

Have you considered just using something like a motor bracket?
ie:

You can get them from Pololu, Ebay or Myself. They are nice and light and hold them well.

Yeah I was actually using a pair if polulu ones but due to the mounting bolts they were too wide so didn't allow space for the battery or speed controllers, what I've got now is much narrower.
If I do need to lose weight I'll just remove the battery holding section and will put holes through the bottom to save weight.

Ah okay, Only other thing I can think is if you just have a load of weight saving holes in your holder?

Yeah that crossed my mind, at the moment it is printed 'sparse' so has a honeycombed structure inside to make it lighter, I'm not sure if the holes would add more weight as you would have the bigger wall thickness around the holes or if it would be lighter! I guess I could always just drill the holes.

Shakey, you should consider marketing mounts like Max's. I'd be interested in something narrower than the Pololu ones.

AKA. Finally finish the file I've had sitting on my PC that was intended for exactly that :P

It is basically something that holds all the internals with plenty of mounting points for the rest of the chassis.
