There's no etiquette regarding such things; we're pretty laid back :). As long as you have something to write on the entry form (which can be done up to the day before) it's fine.

Is that possibly a reference to the 1202 alarm on the Apollo 11 mission? :P

Yeah, the whole of robot wars is pretty laid back, but the antweight events especially (obviously there are certain strict safety rules, but even these are less in number from the larger weight classes simply because ants are generally less dangerous :L)

My first robot was christened Lionel by my flat mates during a few rounds of robot wars drinking game (not advised with the larger weight classes :L).
Alex's robot was named Stanley because he took it to an event but forgot to put a name sticker on it, so just pulled the sticker off his tool kit..

There's even an ant called "I survived the attack of chickens from outer space" (apologies if this isn't exactly accurate!)

Basically you can pretty much call it what you like (as long as it's not too rude :L), when you like :)

Indeed it is a Apollo 11 reference

Am itching to get going on my first ant now. Hopefully won't take too long to construct

They usually only take a day to put together since they're small; It's getting the parts that takes time :P

I just name them whenever I feel I have a name I like for them. My feather went into it's fist event using a placeholder name before I settled on one I liked halfway through the event :P (Not advised, causes confusion XD). generally I find I come up with a name I like halfway through the building of the robot.

Stanley did indeed get it's name from our toolbox (You story stealer you, *glares at Rory*)
My other Ant Accelerant got its name because it was fast... too fast... absurdly fast. I should change the name now, it kept the name through a redesign but it doesn't fit as well anymore.

I've had robots called Assailant, Haywire, Stanley, Accelerant, An Adorable kitten and Gimli :D

My names come from a line of evil/demonic things or related to the music I listen to:

Baby Hell (Baby version of my featherweight Hell's Angel)
Stewie: Evil baby from Family guy (or he was)
F.I.N (Four-Inch Nails): a pun from the band Nine-Inch-Nails
Baphomet: Goat headed figure usually used as a representative of The Devil
Good and Evil (Clusterbot) - the 2 sides of the battle, consisting of Divinity and Little Devil

I also have a selection of Drive all day robots that I let the audience drive at the live events:
Bulletproof: Because it's made from polycarb and it's tough as old boots
Kill-a-chav: Resembles Killertron, and then I got a business card from an offensive t-shirt producer that had that on the card, and I loved it
Saint Jimmy: Miniature version of 'The Saint' heavyweight robot. I was going to call it St Anger (from Metallica) but I found this other song slightly more kid friendly
Kick In The Teeth (coming soon): Papa Roach song

The names, for me, come before the robots, with the exception of Kill-a-chav, that one just got presented to me one day

BTW, if you feel confident enough to do it, you can remove 14g worth of stuff off the Sabretooth without hampering its performance at this weight class (remove all 3 terminal blocks and solder to the board, remove the Aluminium heatsink).

The only rule regarding names is the good taste rule. Apart from that, you can call it whatever you like. Literally anything. I am of the belief that a boring, generic robot name is this sport's number 1 crime (if I see one more robot called Maelstrom, I think I may implode) but its entirely up to you. The only real rule of etiquette is to check no one else uses the name currently. One of the featherweight builders got a bit huffy recently when a newbie announced he was naming his robot the same name that he'd used for years. But this is just polite really. We once had a match in an AWS between Anto and Ant *rolls eyes* and I know one day we're going to get the Inertia vs Inertiant smack down that no one is waiting for...
