More antweight mayhem!!!!!!

I have been experimenting with a lower profile fan unit using a hollowed out 50mm fan blade from hobbyking, with a 20mm dia outrunner shoe horned into the centre. Seems to work well on 3s. Not as much power as a proper EDF motor, but seems to be plenty for antweight use.
I am in two minds whether to use this, or go back a step and re make Trouble, which I think I can design the flaws out of, and would be a simpler solution. We'll see!

Anyway, here is the "prototype"...

Here is the chassis fresh from shapeways...

And here is a youtoob link to it making some noise and stuff...

The channels on either side of the fan opening are for 2 aluminium runner strips, but I havn't got round to making them yet!

I'm guessing the flaps will do that, they will help direct the air flow so they act like a flipper arm.

Jim is your fan on upside down? How much force are you getting from that fan?

Very good.I like it!!
Still not sure whether to use it or not. Just thought the opening vents were cool!!!!
I dont think it will self right reliably. Where as Trouble will run inverted.

Hey Andy.
Here is the fan...

And here is the motor I have squeezed into it...

I am running it with a 12A esc on 3s.

The fan is an unusual design, it is difficult to tell the orientation when it is in place, but a side profile pic shows the blade shape better...

I think the effectiveness of using EDF's in antweights so far is best measured not in the thrust of the fan, but in the suction created. IE the weight that a robot can lift. I havnt done that with this yet. It was more of an experiment to see if I could get a lower profile setup, as all the EDF units are tall and awkward to fit into an ant. This unit is 20mm tall. Still debating what to do with it.
