I'd enter it anyway to be honest, add some wings and you've got yourself the first flying antweight :)

Darn, I was going to do that! Nice take on 'EDF pusher'. I don't think anybody would be too angry about coming up against that one in an AWS! :-)

Feel free to try improve the concept; with it as an assist to drive motors rather than the main drive it could work quite well.. Also probably work better if it wasn't thrown together in 10 minutes :P

As the beetle drive motor from Skutter's flipper has now gone into an actual beetle now (Big Bully), I need another power source for the flipper. Seeing as I have a lot of modified lego pnematics from my days of building LPE engines ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUleSgydUC4 ), I'm planning on trying out a pneumatic flipper setup in the walking chassis.

Bought a bit of nylon piping and an RS valve to help keep flow rates good, and have put together a little test rig out of lego just to get an idea of angles and power. Not having a suitable compressor to hand at the moment I've been using the butane I bought for Mr Burns and Mr Burns' gas tank as a supply. Liquid Butane is only ~40 psi, but even so it was getting pretty good flips (Lionel in the top right of the corner having just been flipped). Another interesting fact about running butane is that even with just the tiniest bit of liquid in the tank, I got about 40 flips before power started to reduce. I've had a look around for a non flammable/ toxic substance which is also liquid at room temperature below 100 PSI, but sadly I'm not sure one exists.. Seems I'll just have to get a compressor sorted... Either that or vent the used gas through a pair of flame throwers out the back :L

Last weekend I acquired a rather nice milling machine:

However I've never really used one before, so as a bit of practice I made Bunker:

Bunker's a robot I've been meaning to make for a while as a spinner test bot. It's made from a milled block of 10mm polycarb, with 5mm polycarb on the top and bottom to hold everything in. It's not finished yet as it needs a load more bolts to hold it together, some electronics, and a scoop cut either end. It's non competitive as it comes in at around 250g, but should be fun to test against.

The pneumatics project is waiting on some more parts to arrive from china, so more on that soon hopefully.

I reckon if you drilled about 1000 holes through the 10mm, you might get it in weight Rory !!!!

Been a while since I've done any work on ants as I've been getting ready for the heavyweight world champs. But seeing as most of the work on that is done I can get back to putting some time into ants. This is what I've got in the works:

Image

This design's actually been on the cards a while, as Bully's always had a surprising amount of weight spare before thickening up the armour and adding bigger batteries etc. However seeing as Alex has revealed his latest plans, I felt it was time for this one to be put into production.
The servo for the lifter is a bit on the small size due to weight and space limitations, but it's more there just to give a cm or two of lift just to aid pushing (which is what I do with Bully most of the time anyway), so it should still be adequate. Also running smaller wheels to help keep them tough while keeping the weight down, and should stress the motors a bit less. It doesn't need to be invertible now either so big wheels are unnecessary.
All the components together are about 120g, which gives me 30g for the chassis... Doesn't sound like much, but the chassis for Bad Idea is only 25g and that has much greater forces through it, so this should be fairly manageable.

Looking forward to having some ceiling fights next term :)

Guess I need to go with my backup plan of putting an EDF in the new Void after these recent posts

Yeah, doesn't look like many fun times on the horizon in the old antweight camp...
