Re: team hectic fleaweight build diary.
sounds like this could be too much of a challenge for me to take on at the moment. i think i'll just leave it and focus on my ants. thanks for the help and advice you guys. see you at the AWS.

The standard motors are 36.5 from the tip of the terminals to the end of the shaft so you have a 2mm gap between the motors.
If you rotate one motor 90 degrees then the terminals don't clash and you gain a little more space.
If all else fails a dremel can be used to shorten the shaft.

Tell you what, I'll shorten the motor shafts and wheels on one of my kits for you which should give you an extra 2-4mm to play with. That way it wouldn't be much harder than fitting it to an ant.

Re: team hectic fleaweight build diary.
thanks Rory thats kind of you. i'll get mum to email you again. looks like fleadom fighter project is going ahead. i'll start work on a new completely 1mm chassis when the sheet arrives.

Just cut down some of my wheels to try it; You get almost 10mm to play with before going over the 3 inch limit.
Might have to start offering flea weight versions of my kit as an option, seeing as it's not too hard a mod.

Re: team hectic fleaweight build diary.
My advice would be to get an old cereal packet or similar thin cardboard, and try out various chassis ideas using card board and cellotape/ glue. Then when you're happy with the design, use the cardboard as a template to cut the 1mm hdpe. Saves wasting hdpe, and lets you play around with ideas and check if they fit in the cube. I probably wouldn't start cutting up the hdpe till you get the electronics to put in it, so you can check they fit properly. Just get prototyping ideas with cardboard first

Re: team hectic fleaweight build diary.
If you want to work out the weight; 1mm hdpe weighs about 0.1g per square centimetre, so if you can roughly work out the area of your cardboard chassis in square centimeters, then multiply that by 0.1, you'll get an idea of what it'll weigh when built from hdpe.
Almost all my ants started as cardboard cut outs.. (chocolate bot still is )
Also, might have to get some 1mm hdpe; its about 20% lighter than the 1mm polycarbonate I use.. I want to try make a fleaweight cluster, so every gram is critical..
