Hi there,

At RCC Marco was telling me about solder yourself speed controllers for featherweights, similar to the ones that Dave has in his FW.

Can someone tell me the name of them please?

Thanks - Simon

The only ones I can think of would be IBC's, but they are no longer supported by the manufacturers.

Most feathers have:

Electronise 15A, 30A, or 40A versions. ( http://www.technobots.co.uk )
RC Smart 100A forward/60A backwards ESC ( http://www.rcsmart.com/escwater100a.html )
Sabretooth 10A dual motor ESC ( http://www.gimsonrobotics.com/shop_rc-s ... tooth.html )
Scorpion XL 12.5A dual motor ESC ( http://www.xbotz.co.uk/spedos.htm and http://robotpower.com/products/scorpion_XL_info.html )
Sidewinder 80A dual motor ESC ( http://robotpower.com/products/sidewinder_info.html )
Mini vantec RDFR22 Dual Motor ESC ( http://www.robotmarketplace.com/marketplace_vantec.html )

The Mtroniks speed controllers are also used, altough not as popular as the other ones.

I myself use the Blue RC Smarts, and The Sidewinder which is my absolute favorite (although a little heavy for a feather). I am going to switch to Scorpion XXL and XL if the first tests work out ok.

I was refering to the electronize series.
Here is that forum I told you about Simon
http://www.fightingrobots.co.uk/forum.htm
check in the forsale and wanted sections to look for bargans. It will save you a bargen no your feather weight.

Thanks guys.

BTW, I picked up a free 18v drill for nothing from Freecycle. Now all I need to do is find another exactly the same!

They won't let me register on that forum, I've sent the administrator a note, hopefully something will happen.

How many amps would be good for a not-terribly-serious featherweight? I'm looking just to compete for the moment, not to win or anything

And lastly, I can see why a speedboat would need 2x amps forward and 1x amps backwards, but this sounds disasterous for a robot. Am I correct in this assumption?

Thanks - Simon

P.S. I've put 2-3rd Feb 2008 in my diary for Robots Live Leicester, which I'm planning to be my first featherweigh event.

no it doesnt matter much. We never get in the 100A region so basicly we use it as a 60A forward/reverse. Its voltage difference what makes one motor turn faster than the other, not current.

Most drillmotors on 12V to 24V will draw about 7-8A nominal, and stall at much higher currents. I prefer dual motor controllers because you can calibrate your transmitter on them. That is what i miss on the rc-smarts.

For feathers i'd go for either the Sabretooth or the Scorpion XL.

I dont like Electronizes. They are robust and all that, but i hate that relay switching delay that electronizes have.

The reason I chose Sidewinder as my favorite is that it is nearly indestructible in a feather.

For somethign to start off with simon I sugest the electronize 15amp
They should easally handle those drill motors.
I expect you to have a hard time finding another one of those drills. Remember, there are some drills for sale for 4 pounds head on the FRA forum.
For armour I sugest HDPE

http://www.directplasticsonline.co.uk/home.php

Its suposedly better then polycarb and cheaper as well. For orders over 50 pounds delivery is free so let me know if your a little short as I might need to pic up something as well.

For HDPE application, look to the top. Hannibalito 1 and 2 and Nebelwerfer are all armoured with it. Nebelwerfer even has a HDPE frame.
