the parade has officially been rained on thanks guys :P
We are aware that we will sooner or later get trashed. We are doing this for the experience of building and fighting with a heavy weight. The only thing that I care about if it gets destroyed is the speed controllers. Which I will probs shove in some kind of unbreakable box.
I plan to build a serious competitor in the summer which will be a clone of one of my ants. Maybe psycho ant since every heavy weight I see is like chrono trigger.
If the being of inconvievable horror gets trashed through wear and tear alone then I will rebuild it in some polycarb or hardox just so I have it around.

Build diary 26th march
I angle grinded the remander of the steel chassie that I didnt want. Took a while but finaly im mainly done for angle grinding. I attached the rear armour and started working on the frount. I added an exter wooden angle just for reinforcement. I cut up and screwed on the front panel.
I later started testing how quick the motors where at 24volts. I was happy with the results, its much quicker then what the wheel chair motors gave us. A good 120+ rpm. I calculated the robot at going 2 meters a second or 5 mph. I might keep these motors for a serieous heavy weight :O
I am prity much done till I get some speed controller so I can wire it all up. Going to have a go at convincing dave we need smaller batterys. Since tanto has only 9amps while we have 80!

how bout I tear your armour off and wear it as a prize :lol:

New Tanto is even thicker armour (dont argue, if you've seen Megabyte you'll understand) and i'm going to a higher voltage which will quadrupel Tanto's HP although i may limit that to double.
120 RPM is a tad slow particularly when tanto is 1200rpm but by the looks of your motors your going to produce something like 300W per motor max not even 1HP, the version of Tanto at AWS22 was 30HP peak with her new controllers the new one will be 57HP peak just so you know what your up against.
Its not like it cost a fortune to build a desnt heavy, Tanto cost less than ?300 and is a serious contender http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHzssWqfm7E thats Tanto on 24v against Kan Opener on 2xBosch 750W motors if u look carefully you can see Kan Openers tyre tread being left on the floor as he slides into th pit

I dont quite understand how I can build a heavy under 300 quid. Consider I am doing this from scratch.....I have nothing
For me to build a serious heavy
40 quid motors (found a cheap supplier on ebay)
speed controllers have
il say a 100quid armour either sanwhiched 6mm polycarb with a steel chassie or hardox depending on price (shush craig i know tanto eats polycarb but behmoth have used it)
wheels duno, gona try and get cart wheels or something
casters, chains sprockets all that jazz 100 quid
batterys, ni cads or sla's up to 100 quid so i have spares
weapon, havnt decided how I will power the psycho ant esc axe. it doesnt need to be powerful jut hold em in place via a shap point. I dont want pneumatics or hydrolics. Maybe linear actuaor or even a wheel chair motor. Il say 100 quid on the weapon
100 quid random fee (you know when you need lil things here and there)

that gives me 550, i think the people who have build a robot for cheap are usually the people who all ready have 90 percent of teh parts :P

My funbot, my targetpractise robot if you will called Drone, cost me:

2x batteries (SLA 9AH)   32 euros
NCC 70 4QD ESC           100 euros
HDPE plate               20 euros
cordless drill (weapon)  25 euros
total: 291 euros. according to the converter of google 197.313496 GBP.

Now if you want to add the wuppies on top of that robot and some bolts and nuts lets put it at 300 euros even.

Salvage yards are your friend. if you need steel, it is a perfect place to get some.

The heavy weight version of psycho ant is just gona be like the ant, its main weapon is its drive. The axe is just there to pin oponents on the scoop. I will probs make it 4 wheel drive.
Btw craig, what controllers do you use that only cost 60 quid?
Btw will probs do a inproved version of The being. Looking at its dimensions and I can see that I can use some poly of hardox. it would only cost a bit extra. I will probs increase the shell by welding some exter support which will replace the wood.

Yeah, this is all fine. We are building a heavy because we want to, not because we see ourselves as a serious competitor. Luck of the draw int it. If we're drawn up against terrorhurtz or kan opener, we'll fight it no problem and aint gunna cry if it has to be swept up at the end. Thats what the sport is about int it. Don't like people who take it all too seriously anyway. We'll try and inject a bit of fun back into it I think.

Well I guess I have a late build diary
29th March
The speed controllers arrived from Rhys and they are 4qd ncc series. I had seen these before on sale at events and holding one was very nice :)
Dave arrived fairy promptly after I told him they had arrived and we aimed to have the thing wired up so we can test drive it out side.
In the process of wiring we deiced to test the automatic brakes which is built into the motors. We had a nightmare when one of the brakes wouldnt open even though power was being sent to it.
We were preparing to opening up the motor till dave suggested running it on 24v (both batterys) instead of 12vots. To my shock and delight it opened, and we heard a reliving 'click' as the brake opened. I realised that it needed 24v and that the reasson why it had such thin wire is because it didnt draw many amps.
We decided that we needed a brake so we went out shopping. We first bought some chicken burgers (cause we were hungry), then we went to wilkensons. We got some electronic scales to weigh it. We headed to maplins and bough 1 big aluminium box for the 4qd controllers, 1 small plastic box, for the rx and a switch.
We headed to halfords for some kind of broken nut removal tool. I had checked online and saw some of the tools that we could use. Halfords had one but it was 23 quid. I was hesitant since I didnt think it would work. Dave was possitive that it would work. For once all preassure was on dave to deliver. Usually all preassure was on me for our investments, the wheelchair, the controllers, the wood cutting. Liz met up with us and we headed back together.
Dave started trying to get that nut out and i was right it didnt work. The nut wasnt out far enough. I was assigned to angle grind the metal around the nut so that more of it was exposed. After I did that the tool still didnt work. However since I had heated up the area around the nut, it became loose and we were able to twist it out. We didnt use those nut removal things at all and I plan to get liz to take em back (shes better at it then me). At least for store credit so we can get some spray paints.
We weighed everything on the scales which btw is awsome. Gave us some very acurate readings. The batterys are 23.3 kg each. so in total the batterys could enter the middle weight division. The wheels weighed 10kg each. Me and dave liked that since they are made with solid rubber and a steel hub. The chassie weighed around 40k kg and the electronics, 1kg. So we have about 7-5kg spare....stupidly big batterys take up a lot of weight :(
We started on the electronics and so I worked on mounting the 4qd controllers to the aluminium case. It was quite a tight fit but I made sure they werent touching. Dave mounted the removable link and switch and removed the frount wooden panle as we needed to get into that area. He also put the rx and battery into the box with a switch. We wired it all up and to our shock... it worked.
We didnt have enough time to take it outside so we tested it in my rather spacey bedroom. Just as I was wiring it up the robot span on the spot taking me out by the foot. I jumped for cover and started crawling away. Yep that hurt..a lot. It stoped its crazy spin and I took out the link. I am not sure why it didnt fail safe but i was in quite a lot of pain. We tried it one more time and it was ok. We were just shocked at how powerful the drive is and how quick it is as well. We stopped it there and we were shocked at how strong it is. We prity much decided on the spot that when I learn how to weld, we are rebuilding this thing out of steel box section.
We however dont have the heart to take it apart before we even tested it in battle so we will wait till after a competition.
My toe took the brunt of the damage and I dont think I will be playing hockey today.
