I know I'll get accused of MS plugging again, but this is genuinely interesting. Go to http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-gb/robotics/default.aspx and you can download the Robotics Design Studio which works with Visual C# Express or Visual Studio and has both text and visual designers. You can use it with real and virtual robots and if you search the web you will find a bunch of work that has been done with it.
Also, those in the UK take a look at the current copy of PC Plus which has a special extra booklet about robots and several good articles.

Looking around the web, it looks like you can use Studio with that as well Also it seems to share parentage with the Hitec Robonova that Oliver had...which also works I believe.
