Not quite sure what you mean by kits, but for an iron I'd recommend an Antex Xs25 (with silicone cable). They go for about £25, and imo are the perfect starter iron. (they also last for ever, I've had mine for over 20 years!)

I'm also using an elderly Antex x25 (sadly with the clunky old pvc flex rather than supple modern silicone) and would also give the thumbs up, though life became much easier after switching to a 1mm tip.
Now if someone can recommend a really GOOD helping-hands gizmo, that would be great. I've tried a couple of the blue-plastic snake-arms arrangements and both were utterly useless - they can get into any position but as soon as you let go the clips spring back a couple of mm, which with surface-mount pads is a nightmare. Oh and even with the protective sleeves on I found the alligator clip jaws were damaging the wire insulation
