Material for shaft

I need to make a short 4mm dia(20mm long ish) shaft.I will need to grind it into a "D" profile.What is the best material to use??
High carbon Silver steel,A2-304 steel,or A4-316 steel
Or something different?

Don't know too much about grades of steel, but I do know we use 316 (stainless) steel at work as it is a machining grade.
If you are planning on using a grinder to shape it, then I think you can use pretty much what you like!

If you are planning on using a grinder to shape it, then I think you can use pretty much what you like!

(Edit) But I'd steer clear of the riper Camemberts lol

I happen to have a nice piece of moon cheese in my pocket.
Would that do?
(I will go for some silver steel,as I found a nice "pack" with varying thicknesses.Should come in handy sooner or later.Thanks Gary.)
