We use 4 x 2/3AAA packs in R.O.N.N.Y. and Antipathy. They are perfectly adequate for servo-based robots.
I think PeteC was supplying something similar for the Pants kits at one time.

If you don't want to/can't go to LiPo, these are a pretty good choice.
