Hmm... I just happen to work for a company in the science park. I might have a sniff around and see if this is something they might consider

Before you criticize another person, first walk a mile in their shoes. Then, when you critisize them, you'll be a mile away and have their shoes.

Hi Jonathon (Bitternboy) did you managed to find anywhere in the Science Park? I really want to bring my son along to an event but every event I have seen has been at least 2hrs away.

Hi :)
The general concensus is that yes, with the right procedure they would probably provide a venue. The problem is that I've never organised an event before and and am pretty busy. I would therefore likely make a hash of it :-? Also, if I were to run an event it would need to be before July as that's when I leave to go and do my degree.

If someone offers to give a fairly substantial hand in the matter and there was enough interest then I would be happy to give it a go :)

Good day to you all. I have just returned from a great day at the Colchester Robot Wars World Championship. My son is now totally enthralled (again) by all things robot wars and I have decided that this may be a good time to get our Antweight back together. Only problem is I have an issue with the batteries again.

The Lipos have been left for a year and are now refusing to charge. Can I use a 9V rechargeable lithium for now? The kind you see in a smoke alarm! I am reluctant to spend any more money on Lipo batteries. I may never compete so weight is not an issue.

I was talking to someone on Sunday (after an incident with a soldering iron) about the lack of events close to East Anglia. I would like my son to compete but I have not seen any regular events close to home. Is there any kids nearby that would like to meet for a battle? My son is 7.

All the best..

Yeah, those 9v batteries should be fine depending on the motor controller you're using.

There are very cheap Lipos about, Hobby king sell suitable ones with oistage for£5 if that. Postage being the most, and as you have a charger, then you are ready for many hours of running as apposed to 1 or 2 before buying a new 9v PP9 style.
Some projects done: Wirelessly controlled mechanical hand/arm
Heavyweight: Short Circuit
Antweight robot : Locking wheel nuts, dell-apidated bANTtry...
Featherweight : Wanna Choppa, CASPer

Thanks I was just considering that. Can you please recommend something? Maybe a turnigy 180mAh 2 cell! I am happy to pay another £5-10.

Do I need to ensure it is charged before I store it? It may be something we only use occasionally and I don't want to replace the battery again in 2 months.

Theoretically yes, but I've just dug out a lipo i haven't done anything with for 6 months and it's still fine.. Some of my bots regularly sit without charging for a month or two and I've not yet had an issue..

As Rory says LiPo's normally retain their charge over long periods.
Most times I have had this problem is when I have run them too low or left them switched on.
Many chargers refuse to charge batteries once they get too low.
Here is a suitable battery they are quick delivery from the UK shop but P&P is £5.26 so I usually buy two or three at a time.
