I depends what sort of speed controller you want. Is it for brushed (usually drive) or brushless (usually weapon) motors? Is for one motor or two? If it's for 2 motors, do you want mixing?
Assuming you want it for drive motors, almost anything on the market is fine for the 12mm gearmotors sold by Technobots etc.
For a really cheap and cheerful solution, you can use the control boards out of standard size (around 45g) servos. These can usually be picked up cheaply on Ebay or second-hand at your local model shop.
Next up, Technobots sell the Sabertooth 2 x 5A speed controller. This will control 2 motors and provides mixing (useful if your transmitter doesn't have it)
RobotPower sell the Scorpion Mini which is a single channel speed controller, but you have to add shipping from the USA and possibly import duty.
There are other small speed controllers available, but the Sabertooth is pretty good value and available in the UK.
