DOOM 2! The rebuild/new ideas :D

Post by Team Orr »

hi guys,

well, as some of you know i have/had a spinner robot called doom! it had one fight at aws 28 but "imploded" :P i had the bits that were left for ages, but over time they went into other robots and thus the doom progect was abandoned...

since then i have had many attempts at building a spinner, all of which have ended badly, the closest i have got is my flea micro nightmare (but atm thats without drive)

recently i have been having ideas for the next doom, and have come up with this, a walker, with a big vert disk and ti/polycarb armor, it kinda looks like the old/newish combatant with legs :)

so far i have the disk, the legs, the lipo, and a base

and for the weapon drive im thinking:

and

http://robotbirds.com/catalog/product_i ... ts_id=1737

atm the robot weighs 120g (the disk is 110g and mde of steel, the legs are 4g and made of that 3d printer stuff, and the base is 2.5mm polycarb and weighs 6g)

il keep you guys updated :)

No offense to jack, but isnt it cheating to use some legs off kwijibo? After i have built my new spinner ant, truant, i am doing a walker with my own leg design, and is going to have an axe.

There's nothing to say where you may or may not obtain parts from.
Most roboteers are friendly and helpful (outside the arena at least!) and it is not unusual to find that robots contain parts that originally came from another team's robots or were made by a friendly fellow roboteer.
Is it cheating to use one of Mr Waller's speed controllers instead of designing your own? Is it cheating to buy a Pants kit from PeteC?
Is it cheating to ask for help on this forum? (I really hope not!!!)
Is it cheating to give someone a 5V regulator if I have more spare ones than I know what to do with?

Answer: NO! You can make or buy whatever you want from who or where ever you like!

i really hope it isnt :P its a tried and tested design, pre-built, and tbh i havnt a clue how to design a set of legs for a true walker (my experiance goes as far as stomp bots) andy semed happy about it at the aws :P

Technically, it wouldn't be cheating to have someone else build your robot for you in it's entirity, and for you to just drive it, but personally, I believe it's against the spirit of things. (Yes, I am aware this happens, and as I've stated before, I feel very strongly about it)

Individual pieces are different, however; at the end of the day, you've designed the robot, you've designed that component into the robot, so it's not like your robot becomes generic or non-personal just by using that part. If you were going down that route, you could say it would be "cheating" to use micro gearmotors, saying that we should make the gearboxes ourself.

Yeah, thats what i meant. Its a bit more fun to see what things other people have come up with, rather than the same thing on every robot. That what makesrobotwars so great, the fact that every single robot is different. If every robot is the same then whats the point?

I completely agree with you, but having the same set of legs (or any other component) as another robot by no means defines the overall design. In a lot of cases, it's more to do with how you implement and use your components, rather than the components themselves.
