If he can get them to sync properly he can use a lower gear ratio on the motor due to the extra torque and have a faster axe.

How about something like:

Each botlet can weigh up to the maximum allowed for it's locomotion as long as the total weight is <= the max weight limit.

Sorted the circuit out so the motor is being shorted and not the battery so it now has brakes :)

They're plastic but some solvent cement should allow you to glue the lego (ABS) to some other plastic.

You could bolt the holes and even weld it using a hot air gun with a small nozzle or a soldering iron with a tip you don't want any more.
